New Year's resolutions
2025 is coming to an end. The new year is around the corner and people are taking it as a chance to bring new things into their life while leaving some things behind. People treat the new year as an opportunity to celebrate, as well as a chance to become a better version of themselves.
But think back to January 1, 2025. What do you still remember about it today? Sure, the celebration, the fireworks at midnight, and the excitement of a new year are wonderful, as it’s always nice to have a reason to enjoy yourself. But if you made any resolutions for the new year, how did those turn out? Why do so many resolutions fade in a fortnight, and why do they feel so exciting just to be forgotten?
Excitement
Let’s look at the reason we make these New Year’s resolutions in the first place. In my experience, these resolutions come from a place of excitement, a place of charged emotion. The new year is exciting, and we have so much motivation to improve our health, make financial promises, or achieve a more personal goal. But what happens when that motivation disappears? January 17 is much less exciting than January 1, and gradually, those huge promises become nagging thoughts that are drowned out by the business of everyday life.
Resolution (haha)
We like the idea of achieving our resolutions, but we don’t like putting in the time and effort nearly as much. If your goal is a big statement such as “I’m going to become fluent in Japanese”, it helps to identify what you can do every day to move towards that goal. It helps to find a concrete way to track progress, rather than having a general feeling of “I don’t know if what I’m doing is helping.”
Maybe it helps to break your resolutions down, since a year is a long time. Maybe it helps to have friends to keep you accountable. And maybe, it would be useful to slow down, take a step back, and reflect on your previous year before diving headfirst into the new one.
Life Update!
This is the last post I’m making in 2025. It’s been a wild year, but an amazing one. The most memorable things I remember are definitely cramming for AP exams, going to ARML and “pulling a James”, attending HCSSiM and falling asleep every Prime Time, and navigating the college application process.
This winter break has not been going great. My days are filled with college applications and procrastination, but in all honesty, I don’t feel that stressed. I think I have things figured out, and I’m looking forward to the things that 2026 will bring.
